A federal court has ordered the Food and Drug Administration to recall the little blue pill Viagra from its market after it failed to warn consumers of the risks associated with it. The agency said it would also require the manufacturer to notify the Food and Drug Administration of any adverse side effects from Viagra, known as sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing whether to require the manufacturer to submit a warning letter to the FDA in response to a lawsuit alleging that the pill failed to adequately warn consumers of the drug's potential adverse effects. The complaint was filed in a federal court in San Diego, California. The FDA has asked the federal government to intervene, and the court has ordered the agency to immediately suspend the manufacture and sale of the drug and to issue a warning letter, the FDA said.
In a letter dated Dec. 12, the FDA said it was concerned that Viagra's risks of heart attack and stroke were more than two dozen percent higher than the one observed in clinical trials, and that Viagra's safety and effectiveness were affected.
The company said it was aware of the risks since the FDA approved Viagra in 1998, but declined to say whether there was any warning about them.
The FDA's review of the drug found that it had failed to warn patients of the drug's potential side effects, such as headaches, flushing, upset stomach, and an upset stomach that could lead to a heart attack or stroke, the agency said.
"The FDA is taking a seriously risk-taking step to address these risks with the use of this drug," the FDA said in a Dec. 3 press release.
